Windows error
Windows error 0x80070002
"The system cannot find the file specified", missing update files, a broken installer path, or a deleted temp file.
What this error means
Windows expected a file that is not there. During updates, that often means the download was incomplete. During installs, it can be a missing folder or an antivirus quarantine.
Common causes
- Interrupted Windows Update download
- Installer looking at the wrong folder
- Disk nearly full
- Files removed from the update cache
Safe fixes
Retry after space and a restart
Free space on C:, restart, run Windows Update again or re-download the official installer. Do not copy update folders from a friend.
Windows Update troubleshooter
Same path as other update errors: Settings troubleshooters. Then see stuck checking for updates if the check never completes.
Advanced fixes
Download the update from Microsoft Update Catalog (careful)
If you know the exact knowledge-base number from a work bulletin, the Microsoft Update Catalog is a legitimate source. Matching the wrong package to the wrong Windows edition causes new errors. When unsure, skip this and use Windows Update or official media.
When hardware may be involved
Repeated missing-file errors on many installers can point to a failing disk that is dropping files. Back up.
When to get professional help
If only one vendor's app fails, contact that vendor with the code. If all Microsoft updates fail after troubleshooters, a repair install is the usual next step.
