Windows error
Windows error 0x80070057
A generic "invalid parameter" style error that often appears during Windows Update, backups, or installs, not a single root cause.
What this error means
0x80070057 usually means a function received a value it would not accept. In practice people see it during Windows Update, when creating backups, or when an installer is given a bad path or a full disk. It is not a unique disease with one pill.
Common causes
- Corrupted update cache or a failed cumulative update
- Not enough free space on C:
- A bad date/time or a damaged user profile in rarer cases
- An installer given an invalid folder name
Safe fixes
Check space and try Windows Update again
Free several gigabytes on C:, restart, and use Settings → Windows Update. If checking never finishes, follow Windows Update stuck checking for updates.
Run the Windows Update troubleshooter
Settings → System → Troubleshoot → Other troubleshooters → Windows Update.
Advanced fixes
Repair the Windows component store (administrator)
Only after backups of your files and only if you are comfortable with Command Prompt. These commands ask Windows to check system files. They can take a long time and need a restart.
Administrator Command Prompt
sfc /scannow- What this does
- System File Checker scans protected Windows files and repairs some of them.
- Why run it
- A damaged system file can make Update reject a parameter and throw 0x80070057.
- What you should see
- A result that Windows found no integrity violations, or that it repaired files.
- If it fails
- If it cannot repair files, Microsoft documents DISM as a next step. If DISM fails too, a repair install from official Microsoft media is the usual path, not a registry cleaner.
When hardware may be involved
If the disk is reporting errors or the PC loses power during updates, fix storage and power first. The error code will keep returning on a dying drive.
When to get professional help
Ask a technician if SFC/DISM fail, you cannot boot, or this is a work PC under management. Bring the exact code and when it appears (Update, backup, or a named installer).
