Windows error
Windows error 0x80070422
Often means a required Windows service is stopped or disabled, commonly Windows Update or related services.
What this error means
0x80070422 frequently appears when Windows Update (or another service it depends on) is not running. Someone or some "optimizer" may have disabled the service. It can also appear for Windows Security if a service is off.
Common causes
- Windows Update service disabled
- A third-party tool that "tunes" services
- Group policy on a work PC
Safe fixes
Check that Windows Update is running
- Press Win + R, type services.msc, press Enter.
- Find Windows Update.
- If it is Stopped, start it. Startup type should not be Disabled on a home PC.
If IT manages updates, do not fight services. Ask them.
Advanced fixes
Undo a services "tweak" list
If you followed a blog that disabled many services for "speed," that is a likely cause. Set Windows Update, Windows Update Medic Service (if listed), and Background Intelligent Transfer Service back to their default startup types. Defaults are safer than copying a screenshot from the internet.
When hardware may be involved
This code is almost always configuration, not a failed part.
When to get professional help
If services will not stay running, malware or a broken servicing stack is possible. A clean repair from official media may be needed. Get help rather than random .reg files.
