Blue screen / stop code

Blue screen: PAGE_FAULT_IN_NONPAGED_AREA

Windows hit a memory error in a region that should always be present. RAM, a driver, or disk corruption can all be involved.

What this error means

Windows tried to use memory that was not valid. That can be defective RAM, a buggy driver, or a corrupted page file on disk. Guessing only "bad RAM" or only "bad Windows" is how people waste parts.

Common causes

  • Failing or incompatible RAM
  • Storage driver or disk errors
  • A newly installed driver

Safe fixes

Remove the last change

New RAM sticks, a new antivirus, or a new graphics driver are the first things to undo. Reseat RAM only if you already know how, with power off and static caution, or let a shop do it.

Windows Memory Diagnostic

Run it from the Windows search box when you can boot. One pass is a screen; overnight is more thorough. Errors mean hardware testing, not a "RAM repair" app.

Advanced fixes

If you recently added RAM

Test with the old modules alone. Mixing unmatched kits can be unstable. Match the laptop maker's supported list when buying.

When hardware may be involved

This code is one of the more hardware-associated stop codes, especially after a memory upgrade or if diagnostic tests fail. Also consider the disk if CHKDSK (when used later, not first on a clicking drive) reports many bad sectors.

When to get professional help

Intermittent blue screens with this name and a failed memory test are a reason to replace RAM or the board, depending on test results. Bring diagnostic output if you have it.
