How to Fix Google Chrome When It Won't Open

Quick answer

If Chrome never shows a window, this is not [slow Chrome](/guides/chrome-running-slow) and not [crashing while you browse](/guides/chrome-keeps-crashing). End leftover chrome.exe processes in Task Manager, then start Chrome again. If it still dies immediately, start with a temporary profile flag or rename the Default profile folder. Reinstall only from Google's official page using Edge.

Quick diagnosis

If several of these match what you see, you are in the right guide.

  • The Chrome icon does nothing
  • A window flashes and closes
  • Task Manager shows chrome.exe for a second, then it is gone
  • Chrome worked until a crash or an update

Possible causes

  • Chrome is already running in the background and stuck
  • A damaged profile that crashes at startup
  • Conflicting software (another browser lock, overlay, or leftover cleanup tool)
  • A broken install
  • The shortcut points at a deleted path

What you need

  • Task Manager
  • Another browser or Edge for downloading Chrome

What this problem usually means

"Won't open" means you cannot get to chrome://settings to disable an extension. You have to work from Task Manager, File Explorer, and an installer. That is why this article is separate from crash-while-using.

Before you start

  • Try the same shortcut, then Start search "Chrome," then the executable under Program Files\Google\Chrome\Application\chrome.exe. If only the shortcut fails, delete it and pin a new one.
  • Disable "run at startup" overlays you recently installed (game bars, "cleaner" trays).

Quick fixes

1. End leftover Chrome processes

Task Manager → Details → end chrome.exe tasks. Start Chrome once. A stuck background instance can swallow new clicks with no window.

2. Reboot once

If an update left files locked, a restart finishes the swap. If Chrome still will not start after that, keep going, more reboots will not help.

Step-by-step troubleshooting

Launch with a fresh user-data directory (test)

Win+R and a one-off command can prove whether the profile is the blocker. Run chrome.exe with --user-data-dir pointing at a new folder in your Documents, for example a folder named chrome-test. If that window stays open, the normal profile is damaged, rename the Default folder as in the next section rather than deleting your disk.

Where profiles live

Chrome stores data under %LOCALAPPDATA%\Google\Chrome\User Data\. Close Chrome completely before renaming Default to Default.bak. Chrome will build a new Default. You can later copy Bookmarks out of the bak folder; do not copy the whole Default.bak over the new Default if it was crashing at start.

Official reinstall

Settings → Apps → Google Chrome → Uninstall. Download Chrome with Microsoft Edge from Google's site, not from a "Free Chrome" button in an email. If uninstall refuses, reboot and try again; do not use a third-party force-uninstall tool as the first choice.

Windows still blocking the file

Right-click chrome.exe → Properties. If Unblock appears (downloaded file), use it. If SmartScreen blocked a fake installer, delete that installer and start over from Google. For scareware that took over the desktop, see fake security warnings before you trust any Chrome "repair" popup.

Does Chrome exist as a process?

Choose an answer. The next question appears below, no account or download required.

When you click Chrome, what does Task Manager show?

End those tasks and start again. If it returns with no window, the process is crashing at startup, test a new user-data-dir.

Profile or install corruption. New user-data-dir, then rename Default, then official reinstall.

Broken shortcut or missing install. Start from Program Files, then reinstall from Google using Edge.

How to know the problem is fixed

Chrome opens to a window you can type in, survives a restart of the PC, and does not require ending tasks first. Sign-in can wait until the window is stable.

If the problem continues

Try another Windows user. If Chrome opens there, the first user's Chrome data is the problem. If it fails for every user, the install or a machine-wide policy (work PC) is involved. Do not download "Chrome repair.exe" from a banner.

When this may be hardware failure

Chrome not opening is a software path. Hardware is only relevant if the disk is failing and files are vanishing, then check the drive before more reinstalls.

Common mistakes to avoid

  • Downloading Chrome from a search ad instead of Google's site.
  • Deleting the entire User Data folder without renaming first (you lose profiles with no fallback).
  • Assuming a black screen after login is Chrome. Use [black screen after login](/guides/windows-11-black-screen-after-login) if there is no desktop at all.

Frequently asked questions

Can I just use Edge instead?

Yes as a browser. This guide is for people who need Chrome. Edge is the right tool for fetching the official Chrome installer when Chrome itself will not start.

Does this fix Chrome opening then crashing on a page?

No. Once you have a window, switch to [Chrome keeps crashing](/guides/chrome-keeps-crashing).
