Browser Troubleshooting / Microsoft Edge
How to Fix Microsoft Edge When It Keeps Crashing
Quick answer
Update Edge from Settings → About Microsoft Edge, then disable extensions and retry. Turn off Use hardware acceleration when available and restart Edge. If the window never appears at all, use [Edge won't open](/guides/edge-wont-open). If you meant Google Chrome, use [Chrome crashing](/guides/chrome-keeps-crashing), the settings URLs are different.
Quick diagnosis
If several of these match what you see, you are in the right guide.
- Tabs show an error and reload
- The Edge window closes while you work
- Crashes started after an extension or a Windows update
- Edge is stable in InPrivate and unstable in the normal profile
Possible causes
- A broken extension (including ones that synced from a work profile)
- Hardware acceleration disagreeing with the display driver
- A damaged profile
- Windows terminating Edge when RAM is gone
- Sleeping tabs or Efficiency mode interacting badly with a site
What you need
- Microsoft Edge
- Task Manager
What this problem usually means
Edge and Chrome share a lineage, but edge://extensions and chrome://extensions are not interchangeable, and extensions you installed in one do not automatically exist in the other unless you installed them twice.
Edge also has Windows-integrated repair, sleeping tabs, Efficiency mode, and IE mode. Those Edge-only paths are why this page exists separately from the Chrome crashing guide.
Before you start
- Note whether one site crashes or every site. One site can be a broken page.
- If the whole PC is out of memory, read high memory.
- If you are not sure whether Edge is slow, crashing, refusing to open, or only blocked on one website, use the PC troubleshooting wizard.
Quick fixes
1. Disable extensions
- Type edge://extensions in the address bar.
- Turn off extensions, especially shopping, coupon, PDF, VPN, and security extensions you do not recognize.
- Browse the site that crashed before.
- If Edge is stable, turn extensions back on one at a time until the crash returns.
Work-profile extensions can come back after sign-in; test before you sync.
2. Hardware acceleration
Settings → System and performance → Use hardware acceleration when available → off → Restart. Same idea as Chrome, different menu. If only video sites crashed, leave it off or update the GPU driver from the vendor.
Step-by-step troubleshooting
InPrivate as a profile test
Ctrl+Shift+N. Extensions are off unless you allowed them in InPrivate. If InPrivate is stable, the normal profile or an extension is the cause. Add a new Edge profile from the profile icon before you delete the old one.
Sleeping tabs
Edge may sleep background tabs. A crash-on-wake can look like "Edge keeps crashing." Settings → System and performance → optimize tabs / sleeping tabs: try off as a test. This is an Edge-specific control; Chrome does not use the same switch.
If only one work or school site crashes when it wakes, add that site to Edge's Never put these sites to sleep list before turning the feature off globally.
Repair Edge from Windows settings
- Open Settings → Apps → Installed apps.
- Find Microsoft Edge.
- Choose Modify or Repair when Windows offers it.
- Restart Edge and test the same site again before resetting your profile.
Repair keeps personal browsing data more safely than deleting profile folders by hand. If Edge will not open long enough to reach settings, use Edge won't open.
What closes?
Choose an answer. The next question appears below, no account or download required.
That page or an extension. InPrivate test. Do not reset Windows.
Acceleration off, new profile, check RAM. If Edge never stays open long enough to change settings, switch to Edge won't open.
Use the Chrome crash guide. Edge settings will not apply.
How to know the problem is fixed
Edge stays open through a typical session on the sites that used to crash, including after a browser restart. If stability returns only while one extension is disabled, leave that extension off or replace it.
If the problem continues
Scan with Windows Security (from Start). If Explorer and other apps also crash, this is not an Edge-only article. Unofficial "browser repair" downloads are how scareware arrives, fake warnings.
When this may be hardware failure
Edge crashing alone does not prove a bad GPU. Combined with artifacts in other apps, test with acceleration off before you replace a card.
Common mistakes to avoid
- Changing Chrome flags to fix Edge.
- Re-enabling every extension at once after a good test.
- Resetting the PC because of a tab crash.
Frequently asked questions
Should I turn off Efficiency mode in Task Manager?
You can try it on the Edge process as a test if crashes started after a Windows build that throttles background apps. It is optional. It is not a substitute for disabling a bad extension.
IE mode sites crash only?
IE mode is a compatibility layer. If only those sites fail, test them in a normal Edge tab. The site may need an update more than a GPU driver.
Is Edge crashing the same as Chrome crashing?
Not always. The extension and GPU ideas overlap, but Edge has repair through Windows Settings, sleeping tabs, Efficiency mode, and IE mode. Use Edge-specific settings before copying Chrome fixes.
