How to Fix a Windows 11 Black Screen After Login

Quick answer

Press Ctrl+Alt+Delete. If that screen appears, open Task Manager, then File → Run new task → explorer.exe. If you use more than one screen, disconnect extras and use Windows+P, then Repeat. A black screen *before* any login prompt is firmware, cabling, or a failed boot, not this guide. A repair loop with no login is [Automatic Repair](/guides/windows-11-automatic-repair-loop).

Quick diagnosis

If several of these match what you see, you are in the right guide.

  • PIN or password is accepted, then the screen is black
  • A mouse pointer on an otherwise empty display
  • The screen is black but you can hear Windows sounds
  • A second monitor has the desktop while the built-in screen is black, or the reverse

Possible causes

  • Windows Explorer did not start, so there is no desktop or taskbar
  • Windows sent the desktop to a display that is off or unplugged
  • A graphics driver crashed after login
  • A damaged user profile
  • A stuck full-screen app or overlay

What you need

  • Keyboard (Ctrl+Alt+Delete)
  • Task Manager

What this problem usually means

Login succeeded. Windows is running. The shell (Explorer) or the display path failed afterward. That is why Task Manager is the first tool, not Startup Repair.

Before you start

  • Wait 60 seconds once. Some PCs paint the desktop late after a big update.
  • If you dock or use HDMI, unplug the extra cable for the first test.
  • Caps Lock light toggling means the OS is alive even if the panel looks dead.

Quick fixes

1. Ctrl+Alt+Delete, then start Explorer

  1. Ctrl+Alt+Delete.
  2. Task Manager. If Task Manager is missing, the problem may be deeper, try Ctrl+Shift+Esc.
  3. File → Run new task. Type explorer.exe. Check Create this task with administrative privileges only if a normal start fails.
  4. If the taskbar appears, you are done with the emergency step. Still finish the display and driver checks so it does not repeat.

2. Windows+P display mode

Press Windows+P a few times and wait a second each time (PC screen only, Duplicate, Extend, Second screen only). Windows may be extending onto a monitor that is powered off. This is a common "black laptop panel after login" cause.

Step-by-step troubleshooting

Safe Mode

If you cannot get Task Manager, hold Shift while choosing Restart from Ctrl+Alt+Delete (if that menu appears) to reach recovery, then Troubleshoot → Startup Settings → Safe Mode. A working desktop in Safe Mode often means a graphics driver or startup program. Uninstall the last GPU driver from Device Manager in Safe Mode and let Windows use a basic display driver, then install the GPU vendor's package from NVIDIA, AMD, Intel, or your PC maker, not a driver-booster site.

New local user

If Explorer starts for a brand-new Windows user and the old one stays black, the old profile is the likely fault. Move files from C:\Users\oldname; do not copy NTUSER.DAT by hand unless you know why.

Not a fake full-screen warning

Some malware and scam pages go full screen after login and look like a black or locked PC. Alt+F4 or Ctrl+Alt+Delete should still work. If you see a phone number and a "Windows Security" scare page, that is fake security warnings, not a missing Explorer.

What do you see after the PIN?

Choose an answer. The next question appears below, no account or download required.

After login, what is on the screen?

Explorer probably did not start. Ctrl+Alt+Delete → Task Manager → explorer.exe. Then check extra monitors with Windows+P.

Windows is running. Stay with Explorer and display-mode steps. Skip Automatic Repair unless the next reboot fails before login.

You are probably not in "after login." Check cables and power. If Windows never started, use Automatic Repair or display hardware checks, not explorer.exe.

How to know the problem is fixed

After a normal Restart (not only Unlock), you get a taskbar and desktop icons. Plug the second monitor back in and confirm Windows+P still shows the layout you want.

If the problem continues

If Explorer dies every login, disable startup apps from Task Manager in Safe Mode or from another admin account. If the panel is black even in BIOS/firmware, that is the display cable, GPU, or lid switch, a technician problem, not Settings.

When this may be hardware failure

A laptop that is black in Windows but shows firmware menus on an external monitor often has a lid cable or panel issue. A desktop that is black on every output after login, with working fans, still may be GPU or RAM, confirm with RAM checks and a known-good display before buying parts. Language stays "more likely," not proof.

Common mistakes to avoid

  • Holding the power button as the first step when Ctrl+Alt+Delete still works (you throw away a running session).
  • Reinstalling Windows because the desktop was on the other HDMI input.
  • Installing a random display driver pack from a bundle site.

Frequently asked questions

Why is there a pointer but nothing else?

The graphics stack started. The program that draws icons and the taskbar (Explorer) did not. Starting explorer.exe is the direct fix when it works.

Is this Fast Startup?

Sometimes a bad hybrid shutdown leaves a black screen on the next start. A Restart from Ctrl+Alt+Delete is a better test than another Shut down. Fast Startup is optional to disable later; it is not the first click.
