Files & Storage / Storage Cleanup

Safe Ways to Free Disk Space in Windows 11

Quick answer

Free space by removing files you can identify, starting with Recycle Bin and Downloads, then Settings → System → Storage → Temporary files. Uninstall apps you do not use. Do not run registry cleaners or "one-click boosters." Use [find large files](/guides/find-large-files-windows) first if you do not know what is large. Leave C:\Windows alone.

Quick diagnosis

If several of these match what you see, you are in the right guide.

  • Windows warns that the disk is low on space
  • Updates fail because C: is full
  • The PC is slow and Task Manager shows a packed drive
  • You already know a folder is huge and want a safe delete path

Possible causes

  • Downloads and Recycle Bin
  • Temporary files and leftover Windows update files Windows is willing to remove
  • Unused apps and games
  • Windows.old after a feature update (time-limited)
  • System Restore or hibernation using a large reservation

What you need

  • Settings → Storage

What this problem usually means

Windows needs free space to update, hibernate, and cache. A few gigabytes free is not a luxury; it is how the system keeps working. Deleting the wrong folder can cost more than buying a larger drive.

Before you start

  • Emptying Recycle Bin is permanent for those items. Spot-check it first.
  • If the disk is making noises or copy errors, stop cleanup and check the drive.
  • The storage calculator helps you think about a bigger disk; it does not delete files.

Quick fixes

1. Recycle Bin and Downloads

Empty Recycle Bin after a look. In Downloads, delete installers and ZIPs you already ran. That pair often returns more space than any advanced tool.

2. Temporary files in Settings

  1. Settings → System → Storage → Temporary files.
  2. Read each checkbox. Temporary files and Recycle Bin are usually safe if you have already reviewed the Bin.
  3. Windows Update Cleanup is leftover update payload Windows listed as removable. It is not the same as deleting WinSxS by hand.
  4. Remove if you understand Downloads is listed there too, uncheck Downloads if you still need those files.

Step-by-step troubleshooting

Uninstall unused apps

Settings → Apps → Installed apps. Sort by size. Uninstall games and trial software from this list so leftover services go with them. Do not delete Program Files folders to "uninstall."

Windows.old, only if you do not need rollback

After a feature update, Windows.old can be tens of gigabytes. Storage → Temporary files may list Previous Windows installation(s). Removing it means you cannot roll back that upgrade. If the PC is stable and you are past the rollback window, it is a legitimate reclaim. If you are still chasing a new bug, keep it.

Hibernation file (optional, understand the trade)

hiberfil.sys can be large. Disabling hibernation (powercfg /hibernate off in an admin prompt) frees it and removes Hibernate from the power menu. Only do that if you do not use Hibernate. It is not a default step for every full disk.

System Restore allocation

System Protection can reserve space. Reducing it frees space and keeps fewer restore points. Do not turn protection off solely to recover 2 GB if you rely on restore. This is a tradeoff, not a trick.

What kind of files are you removing?

Choose an answer. The next question appears below, no account or download required.

What is actually filling the drive?

Delete or move those files to another drive. Finding them is find large files. Do not run a cleaner first.

Use Storage → Temporary files. Uncheck Downloads if you still need that folder. Skip third-party cleaners.

Use find-large-files first. Then consider Windows.old and hibernation only after you know the tradeoffs. If Explorer hangs on a folder, stop and check the disk.

How to know the problem is fixed

This PC → the drive shows more free space, and Windows Update can download. Storage categories should move after a few minutes. If free space returns to zero quickly, something is still writing, a download, a backup, or a failing disk filling with logs.

If the problem continues

Move libraries to another drive or replace C: with a larger SSD. Cleanup cannot invent space on a 128 GB drive full of photos. If files will not delete, see file won't delete.

When this may be hardware failure

A disk that reports free space that jumps wildly, or that fails during cleanup, may be failing. Cleanup tools cannot repair NAND. Back up first.

Common mistakes to avoid

  • Downloading CCleaner-style clones from ads (the real product is a separate discussion; fake clones are malware).
  • Deleting WinSxS or the Windows folder.
  • Clearing Temporary files including Downloads without unchecking Downloads.

Frequently asked questions

Is Disk Cleanup (cleanmgr) still OK?

Yes. On Windows 11, Settings → Temporary files is the same idea with a newer UI. You do not need both in the same hour.

Will Storage Sense delete my Documents?

Storage Sense can delete temporary files and, if you enable it, unused cloud content. Read the Storage Sense options before turning it on. It is not a substitute for looking at Downloads yourself.
